How To Measure Your Doll For Clothing

Do you like the idea of making a doll's dress for your own doll or a friends? Or how about some other articles of clothing like a trouser suit, pyjamas or a night shirt?

If you have never done it before, it is not that hard to create a decent job of making dolls' clothing, but you will have to take measurements, just as in real life.

It is a good idea to know the full length of the doll, but there are no garments that actually cover from head to toe unless you are designing a ghost's fancy dress costume for the doll. Be careful with the chest measurement too.

You cannot estimate it because dolls, both male and female, tend to have larger chests than proportion would suggest that they ought to be. Just look at Barbie and Ken, they could probably hold their breath for ten minutes!

Similarly, the inside leg measurements tend to be exaggerated and the waist way undersized. This is why it is so essential to measure the doll or if the dolls' clothing is to be a surprise, measure one like it. From waist to the hem is enough for a skirt or from neck to the hemline for a dress.

If you are manufacturing trousers, you will require the inside leg and the outside leg to the waist band or hips, depending on the fashion. Then you will also require the waist or the hip measurement and the combined thigh measurement for skirts and dresses or individual thigh measurements for trousers or slacks.

If you are measuring for a top or the top of a dress, you will require the measurements from the sternum to the centre of the armpit and from there to the centre of the other armpit.

In numerous ways, measuring a doll for clothing is similar to measuring humans, but on the other hand, the dimensions can have a great deal more tolerance because seams do not come under stress from movement with dolls. It is fairly easy to just use common sense while measuring dolls for clothing, but practice will make perfect.

One of the best habits that you can get into is making notes and making sketches. When you have become proficient enough at making dolls' clothing, you might be able to sell your produce and perhaps even sell your pattern book as well, if they are all your original ideas.

Tailoring or dressmaking for dolls can be immense fun and children will certainly appreciate a new, unique costume for their doll, but then you will see that for yourself the first time you present your little niece, nephew or friend with one of your latest designs.

Recycling fabric to make pop clothing

Use of recycled materials and other materials such as sewing for dolls.

Green is all the "in" thing these days. If you grew up when I did you would think more along the lines of Jim Hansen of Kermit the frog and talk in a weird voice. In fact, the term "going green" has everything to do with our cooperation to not put garbage back into the Earth, but find creative uses for things we otherwise would throw. This is also called "recycling". That's another word you hear often, but I wonder if most of you have considered use when sewing for dolls.

I would like to challenge you to creative look around your home and collection of articles that you might otherwise throw away, but that makes great accessories and clothing for Dolly. Here are just a few items that I have to use:

...Stretch gloves-Any singles on? I too! Cut off from the tips of the fingers and mittens for Dolly. The finger and range from them in leg or arm warmers.

...Tube socks-I know my dryer has eaten up from my husband is so instead of throwing out the lone survivor, I cut them to work as headbands, scarves, socks or even hats (by cutting off closer to the heel).

...Stretched out its links-great for a belt, chain, or different bracelets.

...Handkerchiefs-A few will make a beautiful summer jumper pins or Velcro or sarong skirt country.

...The hand towels or facecloths – what about a vest to wear? Or create a beach towel or colorful rug.

...A dusty paper Bowl or cup-recruit the help of children and use fabric, feathers and paint left overs to decorate a reckless hat for Dolly's costume party. With care, they can even make it in an eye-catching accessory for her next grand celebration.

The plan is to not take an excess amount of your time, but give you some ideas and how they can be used. If you start looking around your House, I bet you will find many functional used for items that might otherwise meet a premature end.

One last thought: use this as a sewing educational opportunities to do with the kiddos in your home. For the smallest, glue, paint or Velcro is appropriate and with a little well-placed newspaper and supervision, they are great helpers for the finishing touch. If they are older, they have cut and hand them that education start sewing. I have great memories of buttons on old face cloths stitching. I felt very mature up. There is no need for children to learn to be creative. They have the creativity that runs circles around most adults. As they see the complex labor you in sewing for dolls, they will increase in importance and it is an ideal training opportunity.

Using articles you have around the House and find teachable moments makes working with recycled materials and other materials so much fun. There is no limit to what you can create. With a little preparation on your part, you can have a child "sewing" in addition to as you piece together a dress on your sewing machine. Look through the leftovers in your dust collection and see what you can make out what you might have thrown!
